PBS and private prescriptions: questions about the price

The PBS subsidises eligible prescription medicines. Ask the pharmacist whether your prescription is being supplied under the PBS or privately and what you will pay before proceeding.

Ask for a clear explanation

Bring current eligibility information requested by the pharmacy. Ask which part of the amount relates to the medicine and which relates to a service or delivery. Do not assume a displayed estimate is your final prescription price.

Compare the same thing

If discussing prices with another pharmacy, check that the medicine, strength, quantity and prescription basis are comparable. Let the pharmacist assess eligibility rather than selecting a category simply because it appears cheaper.

Your checklist

  • Ask PBS or private.
  • Check the full amount before agreeing.
  • Keep the itemised receipt.

A common question

Is every prescription subsidised?

No. Ask the pharmacist to explain the basis for your particular supply.
