Generic and brand medicines: what to ask
A generic medicine has the same active ingredient as the original medicine, but other ingredients may differ. Ask the pharmacist whether substitution is suitable for your prescription and circumstances.
Compare more than the box
Tell the pharmacist about allergies or concerns about ingredients. A familiar colour, packaging style or brand name is not enough to identify a medicine. Ask for the active ingredient and strength to be explained.
Keep your medicine list consistent
If packaging changes, ask how the new pack relates to the old one and how to avoid accidental duplication. Do not take both simply because the names look different. Discuss any uncertainty before changing what you use.
Your checklist
- Ask about the active ingredient.
- Mention ingredient allergies or concerns.
- Clarify how the pack matches your prescription.
A common question
Are all ingredients identical?
Not always. Check the Consumer Medicine Information and ask your pharmacist about inactive ingredients.
