How to use an electronic prescription
An electronic prescription uses a token sent by SMS or email. A participating pharmacist uses it to retrieve the prescription. Keep the token private and choose the pharmacy you want to use.
Before leaving your consultation
Check that the message arrived and that you know which medicine it relates to. If anything is missing, ask the prescribing practice before making a separate order. A booking confirmation is not a prescription.
Getting ready for pharmacy review
Open the message before you need it. Ask the pharmacy which secure submission method it accepts. Do not paste a token into a public community post, review or general search box. Sending information does not mean the medicine has been dispensed.
Your checklist
- Have the current token ready.
- Check the receiving pharmacy name.
- Wait for the pharmacy’s instructions before travelling.
A common question
Is a photo of a paper script the same thing?
No. Ask the pharmacist what is required for a paper prescription; do not assume a photograph replaces the original.
