Collecting a prescription for someone else
Agree the arrangement with the patient and pharmacy first. Ask what consent, identification or prescription information the pharmacy needs for that particular collection.
Keep roles clear
The person purchasing or collecting may not be the person using the medicine. Tell the pharmacy who each person is. Do not enter your details as the patient’s simply because you are completing an online form. Ask for help if a field is unclear.
Bring back the advice too
Ask how instructions should reach the patient and whether the pharmacist needs to speak with them directly. Keep messages and medicines private during collection and transport. If you cannot answer a question about the patient, say so rather than guessing.
Your checklist
- Confirm permission and the collection plan.
- Ask what identification is needed.
- Arrange how the patient receives advice.
A common question
Can a family member use the patient’s eScript token?
The Digital Health Agency describes forwarding a token to a trusted person for collection; ask the pharmacy about any additional checks.
